Antônio Carlos Gomes Belchior Fontenelle Fernandes era apenas um rapaz latino-americano, sem dinheiro no banco, sem parentes importantes e vindo do interior – do Ceará, da cidade de Sobral – quando abandonou a faculdade de Medicina no quarto ano e o Nordeste para tentar a carreira na música. Era 1971, cinco anos antes de sua grande obra-prima, o LP Alucinação, ganhar as paradas. O destino foi o Rio de Janeiro.
Os anos que antecederam à aventura já eram marcados pela música. Entre 1965 e 1970 participou de alguns festivais. Pouco antes de largar tudo e rumar para o Rio, trabalhava em um programa de TV que apresentou a nova geração da música cearense. Ficou pouco tempo em terras cariocas e seguiu para São Paulo para encontrar o sucesso.
Com a canção Mucuripe, já em 1972, começou a mostrar sua cara e sua música, como compositor, em uma parceria com o também cearense Fagner . A faixa foi gravada na voz de Elis Regina.Dois anos depois, se lançou como cantor. O primeiro LP trazia músicas como Na Hora do Almoço, A Palo Seco e Todo Sujo de Batom, em uma época em que Belchior ainda não havia atingido os grandes palcos e suas apresentações aconteciam em escolas, teatros e até penitenciárias
O primeiro LP não vingou, mas Alucinação, de 1976, consolidou sua carreira. A coletânea contava com as marcantes Velha Roupa Colorida, Apenas um Rapaz Latino-Americano e Como Nossos Pais, outro grande sucesso eternizado por Elis, desta vez regravado depois pela cantora.
Belchior já gritava desesperadamente em português e algumas de suas letras mostravam a angústia que o compositor demonstraria anos mais tarde, quando resolveu jogar tudo para o alto e sumir do mapa. Mesmo assim, ainda atingiu o topo das paradas nos anos 1970 e 1980 com composições como Galos, Noites e Quintais (regravada por Jair Rodrigues), Paralelas (lançada por Vanusa) e Comentário a Respeito de John, uma homenagem para o beatle John Lennon.
Auto-Retrato, de 1999, foi o último CD lançado por Belchior. As polêmicas, os problemas financeiros e a reclusão marcaram as últimas duas décadas da vida do artista. Não estava interessado em nenhuma teoria, nenhuma fantasia, nem no algo mais. Abandonou o casamento de 35 anos com Ângela Margareth Henman Belchior no final de 2006 para viver com a artista Edna Prometheu (nome utilizado por Edna Assunção de Araújo), que conheceu um ano antes.
O cantor estava afundado em dívidas e simplesmente foi embora. Abandonou o flat onde morava com a mulher e os dois filhos, além de dois carros – um ficou no Aeroporto de Congonhas e o outro em um estacionamento próximo à antiga residência. Dois anos antes, já não aparecia mais publicamente, nem sequer fazia shows. Tornou-se um foragido da polícia pela falta de pagamento de pensão alimentícia à Ângela e uma outra mulher, com quem teve um filho fora do casamento.
Uma reportagem do programa Fantástico, da Rede Globo, em agosto de 2009, encontrou Belchior em San Gregorio de Palanco, no Uruguai, e revelou alguns de seus passos durante o período no anonimato. O compositor negou que estivesse desaparecido e não quis falar sobre os problemas financeiros, além de afirmar que continuava vivendo em São Paulo e prometer um novo CD só com músicas inéditas, que nunca ganhou vida. Andanças pelo Sul do Brasil e mais dívidas acumuladas em cada lugar que passou ao lado de Edna marcaram seus últimos anos.
A fuga trouxe fama ao cantor na internet e suas músicas passaram a ser ainda mais procuradas em sites como YouTube e Spotify. Nada que trouxesse Belchior de volta aos holofotes.
